The
United Irish of Dayton, Inc. was founded in 1973 when ten independent Irish
groups in the greater Dayton area came together to represent the county of
Ireland at the first annual "World A'Fair." We have remained an integral part of
this three-day, multi-cultural, event which has attracted over 20,000 people
each year. Now with over 400 committed members, we have worked on other similar
cultural community events throughout the state, and have helped to promote
cultural education through works such as "The Great Hunger" and the "Women of
Ireland" displays, and documentation of the importance of "The Book of Kells" to
the International Student Club at the University of Dayton. We have planned,
organized, and executed a number of dynamic public concerts showcasing talented
and renown musicians whose performances focus on Celtic music and dance. We have
recently supported the restoration of a circular, sixteen foot wide stain glass
church window depicting Saint Patrick with both the American and Irish flags.
With the help of Five Rivers MetroParks we organized, promoted, and staffed the
first Dayton Celtic Festival where more than 45,000 people experienced the
richness of Celtic culture. The United Irish of Dayton, Inc. is eager to continue the mission upon which we
were founded.
